I hate AR on the outside it gets all scratched up. I paid a watchmaker to remove the coating on my Speedmaster because it got so ugly. The purpose of underside AR is to stop the indices and hands from reflecting back and forth between the inside of the crystal and the dial. You can see what I mean here in this pic taken from TRF - look at the reflections on the dial. It's ugly, and it is the trapped light that previously gave Rolex crystals a sense that they were milky.
