Old photos of Decima MAS members wearing Panerai watches are always something very special. Not many photos are known and when completely new pictures surface, it’s all the more exciting. Just recently I came across three fantastic “new” photos and I would like to share them with you.
Panerai watches were specifically built for the Decima MAS. The Decima MAS took part of several sabotage operations in the Mediterranean and sank or damaged five warships and around 20 merchant ships in attacks executed with manned torpedos. Panerai is undertoned and known for its association with the Decima Flottiglia Mas, the Italian Commando Frogmen. Pioneers of the underwater wristwatch, Panerai provided high-calibre instruments to the Regia Marina (the Italian Royal Navy). This watch belonged to pioneering Decima Flottiglia MAS member Ernesto Notari who after the war commanded the special units. It is exhibited in the Naval Museum of La Spezia. For the famous Decima Flottiglia MAS frogmen from WW2, Panerai developed for the first time in their history wrist compasses which were essential to lead the frogmen to their targets in murky port waters. In the early 1950s, Panerai created a new generation of compasses.
The use of Villa Carmela and the Olterra as secret starting bases for night-time missions showed the decisiveness of the Decima MAS and its courageous men – one of whom was Ernesto Notari. Page 150 – 151: Illustration of the missions completed by the “Orsa Maggiore” in the Bay of Algeciras in 1942 and 1943.
