Garibaldi “crew member” number six on my list is a “prototype” named Mille Metri (Mille Metri = Thousand Metres), purportedly made by Panerai in the 1980s. With specifications that the watch must be antimagnetic, easy to read and water-resistant to great depths, two initial prototype designs were created. The original, experimental prototypes were made by hand within the laboratories of Officine Panerai in Florence under the guidance of Alessandro Bettarini.MMP M M P Mille Metri Prototyp 1 Exemplar, Italy
Designed by Alessandro Bettarini in 1985 the mille metri was a titanium naval prototype capable of going below 1000m. The over-engineered case, ratcheting bezel and of course historic reference to vintage crownguards were the components of the build.

The inception of this watch did not follow a specific request from the Italian Navy to develop a modern dive watch for their underwater units, instead it was solely Panerai’s initiative in order to try to increase the revenue of the company. This Prototype was made around 1985 and is the predecessor to the final titanium watch given to comsubin (Italian navy) circa 1980- 1988. Mille Metri Prototipo with Automatic movement.
