"Pre Vendome" Slytech Mare Nostrum Chronograph Stainless Steel 42mm (5218-302) - RARE B&P $Exceedingly rare, the Panerai 5218-302 is a Slytech version of the Mare Nostrum with blue dial and tachymeter bezel. Approx. 40 examples were made. Full details and images of the Panerai Slytech Mare Nostrum (5218-302) This 42mm steel watch featured a blue dial, an engraved bezel with tachymeter scale and an ETA 2801 (manual-wind) movement with Dubois-Depraz module. The other one had also “Slytech” on the dial, but also had a smooth bezel, just like the original prototypes. In March 1997 the Vendôme Luxury Group (now known as Richemont) purchased Panerai and did some slight retouches on the Mare Nostrums design.
Panerai's renowned "Mare Nostrum" chronograph wristwatch was originally designed to be used by deck officers of the Italian Navy. Only very few of these watches were made in 1943 but due to the turmoil during the war, the model never went into production but remained at .In the 1940s, Panerai’s original Mare Nostrum chronograph wristwatches were created for Italian Navy deck officers. Due to the war, these timepieces never made it into production, and were therefore indefinitely in the prototype phase. Approximately 50 years later, the firm reproduced the Mare Nostrum chronograph wristwatch.
The Mare Nostrum model has a number of different features from other Panerai models, lacking the cushion-shaped case and patented crown locking bridge, and featuring a tachometer scale on the bezel. Two other Mare Nostrum models were introduced during the Pre-Vendme period, both Slytech editions with the word "Slytech" on the dial.
